straw goes on the two layers of roofing tin on the shed before adding earth. jon and i also put on a sort of 'filter' just above the gutter, of hardware cloth wrapped around some pebbles to keep soil out of the rain barrels.
osage branches wired together help to terrace the soil on the roof just slightly, so it doesn't slide too much.
