Down to business. One way to make your own toothpaste involves a few very simple ingredients:
-baking soda
-salt
-hydrogen peroxide
-peppermint oil, or other (for flavor)
Thoroughly mix three parts baking soda to one part salt. The baking soda alone, used every day, can be too harsh for teeth, so mixing it with other things helps. A bit of salt is a great abrasive that helps keep tooth surfaces clean.
Slowly add small amounts of peroxide (Very slowly) until a paste consistency is reached. Add 10 or so drops of peppermint oil (more or less to taste), and store in an airtight container.
I have to admit, I didn't store mine in the right type of container, and much of the moisture seeped out until I was basically back to a tooth powder. These are fine, too - just wet your toothbrush and dip it in the powder. For the paste, a squeezable plastic container or a small jar work well.
With this recipe you can make plenty of great-tasting toothpaste without spending nearly as much as you wood for a disposable tube at the grocery store.
Here's a lot more information on making your own tooth-care products. For more pictures of the process, see my Flickr set.
