crescent moon scarification

for about two years now i've been considering having crescent moon designs on my wrists. i knew pretty quickly that i didn't want them done as tattoos. the idea of having a needle shoved into my skin lots of times, the expense, trusting another artist, and the look achieved all worked together to help me realize that i did not , in fact, want these moons done as tattoos. what are my other options? well, i was used to having scars, and i like the way they look. my nails are really sharp even when they're trimmed short, and so i thought maybe i could just carve the designs with my nails. that turned out to be hard even at the best of times (i tried to create the designs in short spurts over those two years), and didn't seem like a very sanitary method, nor even as precise as i would have liked. then last fall i met two friends who had burned beautifully shaped hearts onto their torsos. they looked really nice - like a white tattoo or a very clean scar. i asked my friend

drying mullein for herbal infusions

back at the end of june i harvested some mullein near a local trail. i cut four stems, each about 4-5' tall, and hung them upside down from the curtain rod in my office. they needed to be in a dark-ish place to dry, and my office doesn't get direct sunlight, so it was perfect. it had the added bonus of looking totally awesome, and made me feel special and witchy to have huge herbs hanging over my desk. today i took the mullein down and crunched the dry leaves into two quart jars for storage. if i had really crumbled the leaves it probably would have all fit into one jar, but i was lazy about it. i had to wash my hands and arms afterward (and the counter, too) because mullein's fuzzy hairs are a bit irritating to the skin. the funny thing about mullein is that its most prominent feature - its fuzziness - causes irritation to the throat and skin if ingested/touched. but when it's used as an infusion or salve, and those fuzzy hairs are filtered out , it's incredibl

dreadlocks

for those of you who follow me on facebook (or in real life), you know i've spent the last few weeks dreading my hair. i had dreads once before, from october 2007 - late april 2009, but i never finished the very front. this time i'm dreaded 100%, and i love it! i've chosen dreadlocks because they're a hair style that won't look greasy after only a few days, will keep flyaway hairs out of my eyes, will help me look like an awesome wild woman, and in general will require less materials, time, and energy to clean and maintain. for anyone who's interested, i've written out my understanding of dreading hair so far, based on having back combed dreads in the past and using back comb and twist and rip methods to dread my hair again in the past few weeks. last time i dreaded my hair i left the very front un-dreaded. 80% or more of my hair was dreaded in this photo. when in a ponytail, you almost couldn't tell i had dreads. fooled my grandma every time. before
