context for a current reader

joanjr.blogspot chronicles my journey from civil to savage - that is, from the 'mainstream' culture of modern america toward what my heart, mind, and gut actually want: a primitive life steeped in the sacred and the sustainable. you can read more about the details of where i'm coming from in this post about my worldview.

otherwise, this means that through my posts you'll hear about a life lived On and With the land, involving such things as: raising livestock sustainably, processing animals for meat and skins, planting a forest garden, growing hedgerows, herbal medicines, giving up modern conveniences, making clothing, alternative and sustainable health care, building a radical culture, creating primitive shelter, adjusting to life outdoors, communicating with the wild, and much more.

timeline of the blog

this blog began in 2008 as the 'roving lion travel log', an attempt to keep friends and family up to date on my adventures as i traveled and explored life after/away from formal schooling. this involved my first adventures with a whole, healthy diet (lots of recipe posts), an internship with a natural builder (deanne bednar of the strawbale studio), stints of life at acorn community, and more.

by 2009 the blog became 'young girl, old life' - as i'd spent enough time at acorn community, traveling, researching, and calling on my intuition to have a strong idea of what my 'dream life' actually looked like (hand made home, home grown food, and beyond). this draws us into my journey to live at red earth farms, and the intervening year and a half of adventures and misadventures before fully settling down for the homesteading life.

several years later i'm well on my way to a fully functioning primitive, sustainable homestead. updates now are mostly project or season related, with occasional poetry and abstract/applied theory bits thrown in.
